Growing an Idea

Building on the knowledge, research, work, and ideas of others is central to academic research. The graphic below is one example of a theme that has developed over time:

Academic research may present new findings, results, and interpretations, but these are always presented as being part of a larger ongoing scholarly conversation. When you do academic research you are entering into that conversation, and you will need to acknowledge that you are building upon the ideas of others that came before you.
