Western Washington University Libraries
Computer Use Policy
INTRODUCTION:
The Libraries' computer equipment is intended to enable library users to access the collections and other information resources and services in support of curriculum, research, and information needs. Library computer use is a privilege that depends on individuals using the resources appropriately and in accordance with University policies (ATUS: Ethical Conduct) and local, state, and federal laws. In addition, the following policies are also applicable to use of library computer equipment.
POLICIES:
- Priorities for use of library computer equipment are to access the collections and other information resources and services in support of curriculum, research, and information needs. The Libraries may take steps to regulate computer use, such as restricting e-mail access or setting time limits.
- Due to the public nature of The Libraries, individuals should be aware of and respect the desire of others not to be inadvertently exposed to material and images that they find disruptive or offensive. Users are asked to be sensitive to the fact that some on-screen images, sounds, or messages might be distracting or create an atmosphere of intimidation or harassment for others. Library staff may take steps to maintain an environment conducive to study and research.
- Use of library computer equipment for recreational purposes such as game playing is not permitted, and recreational users may be asked to relinquish their use of computer equipment.
- Individuals may not use or store their own files on library computer equipment. Changes to computer settings or configurations, or any other disruption or damage to library computer equipment or software, is prohibited.
- Duplication of information is limited in accordance with Fair Use compliance provisions as stated within the federal copyright laws.
- Individuals must comply with all further restrictions imposed by The Libraries for specific applications, functions, and resources. Library staff have the right to ask library users to produce identification for various services or for violation of policies.
