Our Winter 2016 issue of “3 Things” brings you information about a new project in Western CEDAR. Staff are actively adding back issues of Klipsun Magazine to Western's institutional repository, beginning with the first issue (1967)! Next, here’s a great research tip: Can't find an article that you need? Submit an interlibrary loan request and we can get it to you quickly, often in less than a day! And finally, we want to remind you about Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Award. Authors of three selected papers will receive a cash award and have their work added to CEDAR for all the world to access.
It’s always exciting when new titles are available for Western Libraries users, and now something old is new again! Back issues of the Klipsun Magazine, Western Washington University’s independent student publication, are now available in Western CEDAR.
Over 150 issues have been scanned and uploaded into CEDAR beginning with the first issue from Fall Quarter 1967. CEDAR staff are busy working every day to add more issues untill we catch up to the most current publication.
Klipsun Magazine has recently become a digital-first quarterly publication with new featured stories focused on interests and issues affecting the lives of people in the Pacific Northwest. Each edition offers us a glimpse into what captured students’ attention at that particular point in time.
Can’t find that research article you need? Submit an interlibrary loan request for your article, and we'll get it for you quickly, often in less than a day! Western Libraries uses many methods to obtain your needed research, including RapidILL.
RapidILL is an article-focused interlibrary loan consortium that provides near 24/7 delivery. Last year, approximately 87 percent of article requests were filled through RapidILL, and those articles were typically delivered to the patron’s ILLiad account within thirteen hours of being requested.
This is possible because RapidILL is an automated system. If your request has a complete citation, it is immediately sent out to lending libraries as soon as you click the submit button, even at night when there’s nobody in the ILL office!
Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Award
By Elizabeth Stephan | Learning Commons Librarian for Student Engagement
The Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Award is given annually to three students who demonstrate outstanding library research in the writing of papers for Western Washington University college credit courses that were taught during either fall or winter quarters of the current academic year. The award gives students the opportunity to showcase both their research skills and the valuable work they are doing here at Western.
Each award winner will receive $500.00 and publication in Western CEDAR, Western’s institutional repository. Western Libraries invites all undergraduate students enrolled at Western to submit their research papers for consideration by April 15, 2016. Submissions can be representative of any discipline, as long as they include an original thesis supported by ample research and demonstrate exceptional ability in identifying, evaluating, and synthesizing sources.
